Thank you for visiting.Today I want to make reviews regarding the infamous dark psychological horror Isekai anime Re:zero. First season aired in 2016 and the stories is about shut-in gamer, Natsuki Subaru who is transported/summoned into parallel universe of Re:zero in the kingdom of Lugunica.
At first I cringed at the stupidity of protagonist Subaru. He is total insufferable idiot, jerk and prideful. When I read character analysis by various forum, reddit, comment sections and reading translation of light novel there is much more into his character than he looks. He is actually strong-willed and intelligent but compared to other characters in re:zero he is under-powered or appears to be weaker while other characters have all times to train as mage, knight, sage. I can’t help but pity him.
As if his suffering isn’t enough most other characters treat Subaru very horribly since he arrives in RPG style parallel universe. No ones help and guide him. He enters woman lavatory by mistake and being slapped on the face and he also enters tavern for demihumans only and chased away and then being thrown under the bridge. He keep dreaming and believing that he is in fantasy universe that there is cute girl waiting for him then come the thugs who beat him to pulp. He is saved by the cute girl, Satella. Then he and Satella are brutally murdered and triggers his first Return by Death ability. He will suffer agonizing death but he can rewind the previous timeline by death. He wake up and redo the past timeline. Poor him, Satella don’t recognize him and angry at him for calling her “Satella”. Actually, Satella real name is Emilia and Satella means “The Jealous Witch” it’s the name of wicked witch who is sealed in the tower 400 years ago.
Despite his death and suffering he determines to save Emilia and get Emilia stolen Insigna for Royal Election back. During the battle between his newfound allies with Elsa, the bowel hunter assassin he is injured and taken to the mansion of Lord Roswaal. Unknowing to him, Lord Roswaal has ulterior motive and twin sisters maid, Rem and Ram who work in Roswaal’s mansion hate Subaru from the beginning even though Subaru do nothing wrong.
Most characters of rezero universe are actually belong to mental hospital. Most of them are selfish, egoist, cruel, arrogant, ignorant, prideful, bitches, asshole and jerk. Here is my analysis of individual characters and I hope you can open your mind and compare information I will give you with the anime and novel.
☆ Rem and Ram
Ok, these are cute onii demon with horn who works as maids in the Roswaal’s mansion. Subaru taken by Emilia to this mansion as a guest for saving her and treats his injury. Without compassion or knowing the real story they already throw jabbing painful insulting sarcastic remarks towards Subaru. They hate him from the beginning. They stop at nothing to discredit him. To them, no matter how much Subaru repay Roswaal it is never been enough. It’s natural for Subaru if he don’t know the duty of the Butler because he never works before but Ram out-spokenly critizes Subaru. But, it’s just a starting point of living hell, Rem secretly wants to kill Subaru just because he smells like a witch. Rem cruelly tortures Subaru and wants to force confession out of Subaru regarding ‘his involvement in witch cult’. Before that Rem already kills Subaru twice and Subaru repawns using Return by Death power to save Rem someone who murdered him. It is misunderstanding but they are both wrong to treat Subaru like dirt and pass judgement on him. Both Ram and Rem are psychotic bitch in their own ways. Ram is more caring than Rem but her opinion towards him unchanged. Ram shows no respect to Subaru even though they care for each other more than they are willing to admit. Fun fact Ram also trying to kill Subaru when he refuses to tell her what happened to Rem. Ok, it’s Subaru fault for showing guilty face but he can’t tell them about his Return by Death ability.
☆ Lord Roswaal Matthers
Roswaal is the coolest character in Rezero universe and Emilia sponsor for throne bidding in Royal Selection. Roswaal is mangrave and court most powerful magician. He isn’t strict regarding rules and really kind to Subaru but who knows he is actually selfish and cruel jerk. He actually sets up Subaru since the beginning. Emilia is actually a tool for him to release witch of envy in order to revive his teacher Echidna. He traps Subaru to help him in his evil scheme. He forces Subaru to challenge the trials in the sanctuary. He will sacrifice anyone if it means achieving his goals. He is behind the witch cult even though it vaguely stated in L.N and anime. He is also the reason Subaru shameful outburst in the castle. It’s not entirely Subaru fault, he already sets Subaru fate using real book of gospel and everything works accordingly.
He can train Subaru to be a knight or mage even give more clarity to Subaru but he don’t. He leaves Subaru to his own devices. Roswaal is the marquis and he can appoint Subaru as a knight of Matthers domain but he keep silent. He never defends Subaru and causes more problem which lead to brutal beating in mock battle at the hand of Julius Juukulius in Ep.13 and causes total humiliation.
☆ Priscilla Braille
She is one of royal candidate and contender to throne just like Emilia and other 3 candidates. He loves to be called “princess”.If I were powerful being I will kill this bitch. Even though she is the most qualified as dragon maiden and next queen but she is the last person I want as ruler.
This bitch entitled arrogant attitude solely because of sun blessing which grant her with vast lucks. She is also called bloodstained bride because all her husband died mysteriously. I suspect this Priscilla bitch is husband killer. She even asks Aldebaran to kill Subaru in episode 16.
Not only her spoiled behaviour and she don’t even recognize unpeeled apple she also believes that world revolves around her and exists to benefit her. He believes all people are servants and must serve her. Due to her blessing of luck she manages to bring all lands she acquires into prosperity and even “Golden Age”. That further increases her close-minded, cruel and selfish attitude to win the throne no matter what.
In episode 16 or one of Subare time loop. Yes, it’s Subaru fault for not recognizing her haughty and close-minded way and ask for her help to defeat witch cult. She smugly asks Subaru to lick her feet and she punchs Subaru when he tries to do so in desperate attempt to save Emilia. She even kicks Subaru and flung him to the door injured and bleeding. She asks Al to throw or kills Subaru. Al also get load of crap from Priscilla, luckily Al is kinder and such bro. He helps Subaru and brings him outside.
☆ Beatrice
Beatrice can be cute loli but she is proud powerful mage and arrogant artificial spirit. Beatrice shows antagonism behaviour towards Subaru from the beginning of the story . She believes artificial spirit is nobler than human while in truth they are just furniture who are doing master or creator bidding. Fun fact is Beatrice is creation of Echidna the scheming witch of the sin of greed. She is created to help Subaru to fulfill selfish gospels.
When Beatrice makes contract to Subaru she actually do care about Subaru. But she don’t try to train Subaru harder, the reason why Subaru is under-trained. If she do, she can prevent Subaru from outburst in the castle and suffers at the hand of Julius.
This is all because she believes she is awesome and arrogant. She should follow Subaru to Royal Selection and the situation will be better.
☆ Echidna ( eki-dona)
She is the witch of the greed and exists in light novel arc 4 because it’s not animated in anime. She is artificial spirit and Roswaal’s teacher. She is one of jerk and also the most genius witch.
She wants to be Subaru contractor spirit simply because she wants to play with Subaru fate and investigate Subaru Return by Death ability. Unlike most other witches of sin, she is dishonest and wants to use Subaru for her own gain. Luckily, other witches warn Subaru regarding this. She also uses and possesses Anastasia’s body.
I suspect Satella is setted up by other witches or Echidna 400 years ago but it didn’t go well and cause the rampage of Satella due to her split personality.
☆ Joshua Juukulius
He is Julius’s younger brother, born sickly and having inferiority complex issue. We may excuse him because he is only 15.
At the first meeting and invitation, Joshua spoke rudely to Subaru even though he knows nothing about him. Joshua makes Subaru as if Subaru owes Juukulius family a debt simply because Julius his big brother calls Subaru friend. Meanwhile in truth their relationship are more complicated than that. Julius and Subaru started as friendly enemy. Both look down upon one another for some reason but Julius and Subaru come to respect each other.
This issue rooted from Joshua inferiority complex and arrogance belief that his family is superior.
☆ Felix
In anime, Felix depicted as friendly and caring while in truth he hates Subaru. He stop at nothing in discrediting Subaru. After mock fight and Subaru loss to Julius he can’t stop look down upon Subaru thinking he is weakling boy while in truth Subaru did everything he could to resist public whipping at the hand of Julius in the form of mock battle. In L.N Felix always rude towards Subaru and to the point of denying Subaru role in white whale defeats.
